Why Are People More Tired Than Ever and How to Rest Effectively?
This morning, I came across an about 8 - minute video on my phone. The blogger gave a pretty in - depth answer to this topic. I got something out of it and I'd like to share it with you.
Let me first talk about a couple of scenarios where people get more and more tired:
-
After a long day at work, you take a break. You scroll through your phone, watch some shows, or read the news. But you don't feel any better. You're still dead tired.
-
You're sleepy at noon, so you take a nap for over an hour. But you find that the longer you sleep, the more tired you get. It takes you half an hour to fully wake up and feel normal again.
These two scenarios are so real. I've experienced them, and they've been happening to me all the time.
Let's start with the first one.
When you're at work, it's impossible to stay focused for 8 hours straight. No way! That's why the Pomodoro Technique exists. You work for 45 minutes and then take a 15 - minute break.
There are two ways to take this break. One is to do some other work. For example, if you've been using your brain a lot, you can relax during the break by doing something mindless or just daydreaming.
But this is just a quick fix. If you take in a lot of information during the break, you might even get more tired because your brain is still working at full speed.
That's why when we scroll through videos during our breaks, we feel more and more exhausted, and our heads feel heavy and confused.
I have this feeling when I scroll through videos after dinner. But if I go for a run or play ball instead, I feel energetic, and my mind is clear and relaxed.
So, what should a real break at work look like?
It should be a time when you don't use your brain and don't take in any information. Just fully relax and daydream.
Now, let's talk about the second point: the more you sleep, the sleepier you get.
I experience this almost every weekend at home. If I sleep for more than an hour, I feel really groggy. I have to sit on the bed for half an hour to wake up properly, and my time just gets wasted.
The blogger explained the reason, but it was a bit complicated, and I forgot it.
To put it simply, sleeping too long causes some kind of change in our brains, and it takes some time to get back to normal after we wake up.
Also, if you sleep too long or too late, it will affect your sleep quality at night. You might have trouble falling asleep or just don't feel sleepy.
Try to make sure there are 10 - 12 hours between your nap and your bedtime. If you don't have the habit of taking naps, you can meditate or daydream for a while.
From this point of view, we should adjust our nap time and bedtime.
For example, try to finish your nap by 2 pm and keep it within 30 minutes. Go to bed before 11 pm.
I've noticed that these days, people either don't rest at all. They work like crazy and hardly take any breaks. Or they take revenge - style breaks. Both of these are really bad for our health.
People work so hard because the job market is so competitive these days. There's a lot of overtime, and it's just exhausting.
So, many people take revenge - style breaks on weekends. They sleep all day or don't get up until the afternoon and then stay up late at night. If you have a two - day weekend, you still have one day to do something. But if you only have one day off, it's basically gone.
As a result, you feel even more tired. You've taken a break, but you don't really feel rested. Why? Because it seems like you don't have any time for yourself.
We define our own time as the time we can control and use freely. People say money is for buying time and freedom.
This kind of time usually doesn't include sleep time.
I know quite a few self - media people and entrepreneurs. They don't rest much. They don't know how to rest or are too afraid to rest. Maybe they're just too anxious or passionate. They're workaholics.
This is also very harmful to their health.
After talking about all this, here's a summary of the action plan:
During work, take a break every 40 minutes to relax your brain. Don't scroll through your phone or think about problems.
Keep your nap time within 30 minutes and don't take it too late.
Balancing work and rest can help you stay in a good working state, and a good state means high work efficiency.
OK, did you take a rest today?
